The Mountain View–Los Altos Board of Trustees unanimously voted on Monday, June 21 to adopt the “Local Control and Accountability Plan” (LCAP), which centers around student equity and a safe learning environment amongst other goals. This plan will be implemented by the MVLA District for the 2021–2022 school year.

The LCAP — a model by the California Department of Education — outlines eight principle State approved standards for schools: basic conditions for learning, implementation of State standards, parent involvement, student achievement, student engagement, school climate, access to rigorous curriculum and other student outcomes. The individual school districts can then map out the specific targets within those eight principal areas.

The District-approved plan includes goals to be achieved within the next three years, ensuring that all students have access to equitable learning opportunities, an increase in parent engagement and to continue to provide healthy, safe and respectful learning environments for all students to thrive in. The plan also looks to increase the diversity in the school’s many parent-run organizations, as well as promote parent involvement in the school through surveys that will be sent out to the MVLA parent community.

The LCAP states that the District will continue to promote diversity in honors and advanced placement classes in an effort to ensure high-quality learning opportunities for all students. Consequently, the plan outlines that teachers will be responsible for laying the foundation for helping all students earn a passing grade of a “C” or higher in those advanced classes. The regular academic and career counseling support for students will still be maintained through the next three years.

The District has also stated that teachers are required to increase the amount of culturally diverse texts, lessons and materials that they use in their curriculums.

For safety and wellness, the District will continue the integration of social emotional learning into the school day, as well as the implementation of a gender support plan that aims to create a shared understanding among the school community that students’ gender will be accounted for and supported at school.

Staff, parents and students were consulted during the drafting process of the LCAP and the plan is currently awaiting State approval following approval from the Board. A link to the LCAP can be found on the District website. Here is the direct link to the LCAP.
