With new members, Los Altos High School’s Marching Band is back to pre-COVID-19 numbers, bringing a resurgence of trips like the annual Disney trip. The last time Marching Band went to Disney was nearly eight years ago, and many seniors had middle school Disney trips canceled due to COVID-19.
“Ever since seventh grade, there’s been a Disney trip planned,” senior Alec Metcalf said. “I’ve never been because it kept on getting canceled. So, sixth time’s the charm!”
Marching Band went on their first Disney trip since after COVID-19. They left on Friday, November 8, and returned on Monday, November 11.
“It definitely helps with new membership,” senior Jason Doyle said. “I also think it’s very necessary for a musical education.”
While at Disney, the Marching Band performed in the parade for the people at the park. Students played the same music as they did at the Homecoming parade, helping them build confidence.
Performing for crowds with strangers recording can be very nerve-racking for students. However, this gives Marching Band another opportunity to improve their performances and have deep bonding experiences — crowd-performing is even a factor in drawing new members.
“It puts them in a new environment around different people and different audiences,” Marching Band teacher Ted Ferrucci said. “It’s just a great experience in lots of different ways.”
