High school can be stressful, and sometimes it doesn’t seem like anyone out there can really help. Students seek help from many different places and people such as a school counselor or friend. But advice from counselors can sometimes be impersonal, and friends can give less than useful advice.

But the Latin Student Union (LSU) wants to be another resource students can turn to when things get a little rough, with its new outreach program, All Together As One.

The program is scheduled to meet in room 409 Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 4:30 p.m., starting Monday, October 8. This is the same room and time as Homework Club, and the two will overlap with each other.

“It’s a support system where students can get help,” founder and junior William Martinez said. “It’s also a place for them to develop academic and social skills.”

This new “buddy system” will incorporate both teacher and peer tutoring. According to William, teachers like English teacher Arantxa Arriada have been “big supporters of the program.”

The program will focus on ELD and at-risk kids, but it’s open to anyone. LSU wanted to start the program as a way to help kids that didn’t speak English very well become more integrated with the school.

“I was in their shoes once and I would have liked someone to do this for me,” William said.

The language barriers that many students face can make it harder for them to approach other students and find somewhere to belong. All Together As One will give students academic help, but also be a place for them to form new relationships with other kids.

“We’re trying to be able to have students come in if they need help with any homework or anything … and we’re going to be there to help them,” Jossie said. “[The program] is for anyone who needs help with anything.”
