Prospective candidates presented their qualifications at the Latino Student Union (LSU) meeting on Friday, May 24. Each student running for an officer position in the upcoming 2024-25 school year gave a one minute speech explaining their plans for the club’s future and their goals for their position.

The meeting took place on Wednesday, May 22, however, because they received more submissions than people who attended the meeting, LSU advisor, counselor Ariel Rojas, scheduled a new meeting to recount votes and ensure fairness. After the delay, LSU announced their new officers for the 2024-2025 school year on Tuesday, May 28.

Secretary – incoming senior Litzy Rivera Ortega

Activities coordinator – incoming senior Juan Lopez and incoming junior Manuel Contreras

Publicity manager – incoming senior Charles Durand

Dance choreographer – incoming seniors Camila Fonseca, Yocelin Rojas and Lucia Trujio

One student in particular showed her love and passion for LSU by running for two positions, vice president and secretary.

“It can be a struggle,” Lupita said. “But I just really want to take a risk.”

As next year’s vice president, Lupita wants to show that LSU is not only a club for Mexican students, but for all different Latino cultures and backgrounds. Lupita also aspires to include more English language development (ELD) students, since she is an ELD mentor herself.

“We’re all about inclusiveness and respect,” Lupita said.

Charles, the future publicity manager, shares ideas about how to make inclusiveness and outreach a key aspect of the LSU Instagram account, through his past experience with social media management.

“My main goal would be enhancing our posts and posting more often,” Charles said.

Like Charles, the rest of the incoming officers have their own plans and hopes for LSU’s future  next school year.

To see these plans in action, all are welcome to join LSU meetings, which take place bi-weekly on Wednesdays in room U201, in the Student Services Building.
