From maintaining their standing in the leagues’ top spots to qualifying for CCS three years in a row, the LAHS varsity girls golf team has a long history of success.
However, after many seniors graduated last year, the rest of the team was left to rebuild. Despite the ultimate goal of qualifying for leagues, their main focus this season has been to support the underclassmen.
“We wanted the new players on the team to get more experience and to feel more comfortable on the course,” Captain senior Cami Thai said. “And they were all really energetic and eager to learn.”
Rising to the position of captain this year, Cami and senior Abby Zhou are amongst the more experienced players. According to Cami, the more seasoned players advised and assisted the freshmen in improving their game throughout the season.
“Since we’ve been in their position before, if they’re struggling through something, we would go help them,” Abby said. “We gave them tips on reading putts, their swing, and how to handle the mental pressure.”
The mental aspect was one of the Eagles’ biggest challenges, especially for freshmen who were not accustomed to the long games and the pressure of playing alone.
“Everyone comes back so tired,” Cami said. “There’s also always the pressure to win, so we cheer them on and support them.”
According to the seniors, however, the team’s camaraderie has improved thanks to the long games and bus rides back.
“It’s definitely been an enjoyable experience,” Abby said. “Unlike some other sports, we can talk during the game, so a lot of bonding happens there.”
“I’ve got the chance to play with a lot of our freshmen, and it’s been fun taking on a different role as a mentor,” Cami said. “I know they’ll improve a lot even after we leave.”
The Eagles ended their season qualifying for leagues with a 3–12 record and are off to start the playoff season at Bay View Golf Club in Milpitas on Tuesday, October 29.
