The varsity girls volleyball team has had a challenging season filled with difficult losses and a few shining wins. With a league record of 2–9 in the De Anza League, the Eagles currently rank sixth as their season ends.
With three consecutive losses to start their season, the team’s first league win came in the rivalry game against the Mountain View High School Spartans. After clinching the victory in the final set, the game ended with a 3-2 win for the Eagles.
“A lot of people really stepped up and brought the energy,” senior Captain Ruby Border said. “It was a super fun game and was probably the best I’ve seen everyone and myself play.”
The Eagles have improved their teamwork this season, translating to the court. According to Head Coach Peter Kim, players have been able to depend upon each other and trust the work that they’re all doing.
“Our team bonding has been getting better on the court,” Kim said. “We’ve grown to be a team.”
Following their (score) defeat against Gunn High School on Thursday, October 3, the Eagles lost five consecutive games.
The early excitement from the rivalry victory had faded, and the Eagles lost their rematch home game 1–3 against the Spartans.
“The team has become too comfortable with constantly losing,” Ruby said. “That would be okay if we knew that everyone was putting in the most effort possible.”
The Eagles celebrated their Senior Night at their last home game on Friday, October 25, after a win against The King’s Academy with a score of 3-0. The Senior Night festivities comprised speeches and celebrations for Ruby and seniors Taylor Clement, Sophia Costa, and Maggie Lin.
Overall, the team’s season will likely end in CCS. However, Ruby anticipates that the team must approach it with an improved mindset to succeed.
“Unless there is a major shift in attitude by many of the players on the team, we will likely not go far,” Ruby said.
