In its inaugural season, the girls flag football team faced a lot of great highs and lows. After big losses like 18–25 and 0–19 early in the season, team morale was challenged.
“We had to overcome thinking too much about winning or losing and getting into our heads,”
Captain junior Ida Amren said. “We even had games where everyone was yelling at each other.”
A turning point, however, was when the Eagles faced the Wilcox High School Chargers on Monday, October 14. It was the team’s third game against Wilcox, and a rivalry was brewing.
Tensions rose when a Los Altos player got injured in the close match. With cheering from the post-practice football team, and a hard-fought 4 quarters, the Eagles won 13–7.
“There was so much energy and tension it made the game more exciting,” Ida said. “The football team hyped us up even more.”
“A lot of this year was laying down the tracks of this new sport as we moved along them,” Head Coach Gabriel Stewart said. “I think the team has done a wonderful job overcoming that.”
Despite their tough wins and losses, the Eagle’s initial struggles ultimately brought them closer together, ending the season 7–1–4 after a 19–13 rivalry victory over Mountain View.
“We all get frustrated with each other sometimes, but at the end of the day, we are like sisters,” Ida said. “Our bond is stronger than frustration, which is a key part of our team. Flag football is a new opportunity for girls like me, who have been waiting for this chance, and I want every player to go out there and leave everything they have on the field.”
