The Los Altos High School Green Team hosted its annual Earth Week event from Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26, which included activities such as differentiating vegan versus regular chocolate chip cookies, sorting waste, trivia, plant giveaways and using a bike to blend smoothies.
Green Team’s process for setting up this year’s Earth Week was simple: Separate the club into groups, one for each day’s lunchtime festivities, and have them plan out what they want to do. One group was in charge of the cookie station, one in charge of the sorting waste event, one in charge of trivia, one in charge of the plant giveaways, and the last one in charge of the blender bike. Each group was overseen by club co-presidents senior Aarthi Venkatraman and junior Kelsey Nguyen.
The Green Team has created a club goal to promote sustainability and the ease of a sustainable lifestyle.
“I feel like a lot of people are just naturally deterred from entering [a green] lifestyle because they feel like it’s so much more inconvenient than a less sustainably-conscious lifestyle,” Kelsey said. “For many of our events, we really want to try and disprove that kind of mindset by integrating these activities into very accessible activities for the students.”
“We want to create a culture of sustainability that is accessible,” Aarthi says.
These events have been created to not only promote sustainability but also make it fun. Through these activities, the Green Team is attempting to create a community of sustainability.
