The varsity girls water polo team played at Homestead High School in a tight game today, where it lost 7-8 in overtime. The junior varsity team also lost, with a final score of 3-11.
Co-captain senior Ally Bakos and junior Jenna Gavenman scored three goals each. Co-captain junior Casey Vanneman scored one goal.
The team saw some problems with motivation during this game against a team they had been able to beat in the past.
“We beat them last time but we didn’t come into this game as motivated as the last game,” sophomore Romy Aboudarham said. “We had lots of lucky shots but we weren’t playing as a team.”
While the score’s narrow margin highlighted the team’s strengths in offense, it also revealed areas for improvement in terms of defense.
“We played good offense, but we lost our ground with our passing,” Jenna said. “For whatever reason, our passes kept going to the other team. If we could play better defense as a team and communicate more, we would have been able to take them down.”
Using this game as a tool, the team can now work to improve its defense and motivation to maintain their ground in future games.
“In the future, I think we need to focus and take our time with our shots to avoid losing opportunities,” Jenna said. “As the season progresses, we certainly know each other better as players and can work off of that now.”
