The girls varsity soccer team lost to Mountain View High School on Thursday, January 22 by a score 3-0.
“The game today was very competitive and Mountain View has a very high level of play,” center-defender sophomore Quinne Woolley said. “It was sad to lose, but we know we can only go up from here, and we intend to.”
At the half, the score was 2-0, while the Mountain View’s last goal, the final goal of the game, was made in the second half. While senior co-captain Allie Crum made a few strong shots on goal against the Spartans, and an especially close free kick just outside the box, no goals were scored for the Eagles.
“Not surprisingly, I am disappointed with the outcome,” senior co-captain Rebecca Andrews said. “We did not play our best game today. There is a lot we need to work on.”
Woolley, however, credits the upperclassmen with a lot of the team’s core force. Senior co-captains Allie, Rebecca and Annie Gaffney played well today, and Annie notably held the midfield to stop Mountain View’s advances.
“Our upperclassmen work the hardest on the team and continue to lead us with confidence even when we are struggling,” Woolley said.
The team, however, agrees that today was not a failure, but a learning experience.
“We really need to work on moving off the ball because that is what killed us today,” Andrews said. “Without movement, we will not hold the ball.”
While they agree that the today’s final score could have been better, the team believes that they still managed to showed off some of their impressive skill out on the field.
“There are definitely some good things that happened out there today,” Andrews said. “[Sophomore] Meilin Tsao, our goalkeeper, really did play an exceptional game today…She had a few really nice saves. [Sophomore] Megan Woolley, also had a nice game today, and she kept up with the physicality they [Mountain View] had up top.”
Los Altos will play their next game against Homestead at home this Saturday, January 24. On February 12, they will take on Mountain View again in hopes to overcome today’s defeat. The team believes that with more practice and time together, they will only grow more powerful.
“We just need to keep playing together and find a groove,” Woolley said. “Once we’ve found it, our season will turn around and we can become a dangerous team that proves why we belong in this league.”
