Last Wednesday, October 16, the Los Altos High School varsity girls flag football team was defeated on senior night in a last-minute 12–19 loss against the Milpitas High School Trojans.
“I’m really proud of our team’s efforts at the game,” Captain senior Karla Araracap said. “I think we’ve been improving each performance, and while we didn’t win this time, there’s always room for improvement.”
The Eagles started strong, blocking the first rush from Milpitas. With a touchdown by Captain sophomore Erin Jesensky, followed by two interceptions from Karla and junior Willow Tock, the Eagles dominated both ends of the field in the first 10 minutes. But Los Altos was unable to capitalize on the interceptions, and a Trojan touchdown ended the half 6–6.
“Our coach talked to us about keeping our stress down so we could open up chances and opportunities for some good plays,” Erin said. “I made sure to reassure the team about keeping the intensity up because everyone wanted to win for the seniors.”
The Eagles did just that, starting the second half with an interception by Captain senior Abigail Santos, followed by a touchdown from sophomore Oshea Orozco. But shortly after, Milpitas substituted a new quarterback, and with two touchdowns the Trojans secured their victory.
“It was a great game to watch, and I thought it was really exciting,” Head Coach Gabriel Stewart said. “Although we came out on the losing end, that game set a standard. These are really competitive teams, and we’ve challenged them all to the last drive.”
Karla, Abigail, and seniors Lindsey Lajola and Edith Ann Chua all played their part in their last home game of the season, and Senior Night celebrations in the quad followed the game. Underclassmen delivered speeches and presented a poster and basket for each senior.
“The seniors were so brave for trying out for a sport they were only going to have one year of,” Erin said. “They had helped to create such a tight community and friendship within the team. It wouldn’t be the same without them, and I know everyone is really sad about the season ending.”
“Being a captain on the first-ever girls flag football team has been the best experience,” Karla said. “I’ve developed leadership skills and the ability to work with the other captains to ensure that we have the best season possible.”
The Eagles will travel to Gunn High School on Wednesday, October 23, to face off against the Titans and Mountain View High School Spartans.
