After the new coaching staff called for a complete reset for varsity football this fall, the Eagles have experienced a few big highs but some lows.
“The team has been playing resilient this year, even when things haven’t gone our way,” Head Coach Mark Adams said. “The players have been committed since day one, as we have been throwing in a lot of new plays and schemes.”
With a tough loss in their first game against Calaveras High School, the new coaches helped guide the team to a 34–2 win against Rancho San Juan High School, cultivating spirit back to the squad.
“I think the team has done a good job at adapting,” Captain senior Miles Field said. “I feel like the coaches and players are doing a good job at connecting with one another, which helps us a lot in the game.”
The team went through a tough four-game losing streak throughout most of September and October, with injuries across the team taking out many key players, affecting team unity.
“It’s been hard for the team because people have to play in positions they haven’t played before,” Miles said.
Still, the Eagles persevered and broke their losing streak with a 20–7 win against Homestead High School on Thursday, October 17, with a strong performance for the team all around.
“Homestead was a good game because we won with balance,” Adam said. “Being strong with our running, passing, and tenacious defense, combined with good special teams, led to a great performance. We made some mistakes but still came away with a victory.”
For the Eagles, this year was about overcoming the many challenges on the road to victory. After claiming the El Camino League Champion title last year, the team lost a strong senior class and three underclassmen and had to adapt to a new coaching staff. Yet, the team has rose above all these difficulties, dramatically improving their throwing game and defense to secure more victories.
“People told me it will be hard to win here at Los Altos, but I totally disagree,” Adams said. “We are a young football team that has started 14 underclassmen, all of whom have never played varsity football. As a team, we are building the foundation for something special: the senior’s legacy to Los Altos High Football.”
