Eagles Defeat Gunn in Pre-Season Scrimmage
August 28, 2015
The varsity football team dominated a scrimmage against Gunn today, August 28.
Instead of the usual format of a football game, both teams played consecutive series on offense and defense, foregoing kickoffs and starting from the 40 yard line. After a few series, the teams switched offense and defense to give both sides of the ball practice.
Despite not being a real game, the players still relished the opportunity to play a real opponent.
“I think our guys were really getting tired of hitting each other every day,” senior quarterback Kyle Gounod said. “[We] really wanted to hit some other guys and get different faces out there, and I think it really boosted our play.”
The offense led the way, shredding through the Titans’ defense. Kyle completed his first five passes and finished the day 8-14 with two touchdowns. The running game carried most of the load, led by senior Patrick Vargas and junior Max Higareda. Patrick had the most carries, scoring twice on eight touches. Max started the game red hot, scoring touchdowns on both of his first two carries, including a long 40 yard score. He finished the game with three touchdowns on four carries.
“It’s always good to get out there and get that first [touchdown],” Max said. “Then to go back and get that second one felt amazing.”
The Eagles added two more rushing touchdowns, one each from seniors Eddie Melchor and Ben Roach.
Los Altos’ defense had little trouble stopping Gunn’s ground attack, yielding only one touchdown on a full drive and two more on extra-short fields.
The Eagles’ first regular season game is next Saturday, September 5 at home against Soquel at 1:30 p.m. Last year, Los Altos fell to the Knights 33-13, but the Eagles are coming into the game with confidence and determination.
“They’re a good team, a big team,” Kyle said. “They had our number last year, but I think we’re a lot more improved this year.”
