At just twelve years old, senior Connor Salita faced FC Barcelona in the quarterfinals of a prestigious soccer tournament in Spain. He was tasked with guarding current Spanish superstar Lamine Yamal, now regarded as one of the best young soccer players in the world.
“I remember these moments when Connor was defending Yamal and how hard it was, but he didn’t care,” Coach Sergi Tortell said. “Connor is very difficult to beat mentally. Any player on the other team will have a hard time playing against him — even Lamine Yamal.”
Since then, Connor has gained experience playing for Los Altos High School and high-level club teams, all bringing him to his recent commitment to Colorado College to play soccer.
Connor was introduced to soccer by his parents at four years old. He appreciated the sport from an early age, as it allowed him to spend time with his friends.
“Friends still play a major role in my love for the sport, but now I also think about how soccer can help me with my future,” Connor said. “The sport has helped me reach places that weren’t previously accessible to me, like college.”
After watching Colorado College play a match, Connor was moved to finalize his commitment to the school. Hoping to major in economics, he believes Colorado College is the right choice because of its access to nature and good academics.
“There is also a lot to do outdoors in Colorado,” Connor said. “I really enjoy being outside with people and making new friends.”
Connor attributes much of his success to Tortell — his childhood coach at Breakers FC — who played a significant role in his journey to such a high level of success.
To Tortell, Connor brings much more than just raw talent: his discipline, willingness to learn, and sportsmanship make him a full package.
“Connor is always going to give 100 percent for the team,” Tortell said. “He never stops himself from doing anything it takes for the team to win. Connor is also very consistent — if he says he’s going to do something, he’s going to do it.”
According to club teammate senior Jaiman Chavan, Connor is a great guy on and off the field.
“He always makes sure to help out the coach, pick up teammates, and put in the extra work,” Jaiman said. “He is the type of teammate that you want to carry you into battle.”
