While every other concert throughout the year is fully directed by choir teacher Lauren Diez, Choir’s annual Spring Sing — set for next Tuesday, March 18 — is filled with student-led performances from all levels of choir.
Since the beginning of this semester, students have taken songs from musicals like “Wicked,” mainstream artists like Laufey, and classic hits like “Stand by Me,” — and put their own spins on them.
“Choir students have really unique music tastes,” Volare member junior Mira Sumant said. “It’s a huge variety of songs — the only connecting factor is that it’s all vocal music.”
“You really get to hear a ton of different styles,” Volare member junior Caila Kim said. “People get to push themselves out of what they normally do.”
Planning the performances forces students to engage in a different — but collaborative — process.
“Each individual person has to be more assertive with what their vision is for the song, but also compromise,” Caila said. “It’s a different experience, but it’s also eye-opening and very cool.”
“It’s not always easy,” Diez said. “But in the end, it brings people that much closer together because they have to be so involved with each other.
By showcasing unique renditions of popular and classic songs, choir seeks to create an environment that is both emotional and entertaining.
“The performances are much more direct because it’s less people singing in them,” Caila said. “It’s easier for the audience to feel the emotion — it’s a lot more intimate.”
“I hope the audience sees the dedication that exists in our community, the passion for this art form, and the diversity in the kind of people who join choir,” Mira said. “This is an opportunity for people to show what kind of music they enjoy and express themselves.”
The concert will take place on Tuesday, March 18 at 7 pm in the Eagle Theater. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for non-students.
