California had seven mass shootings this month
Since the start of the new year, there have been two very high-profile mass shootings in California, but they weren’t the only ones. There have been 52 mass shootings in the United States in January 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA). The GVA categorizes an act of violence as a mass shooting if four or more people were shot or killed, excluding the shooter. Seven of those shootings — listed below — were in California.
- On Friday, January 6, a gunman killed one person and injured three in San Francisco’s Mission District. Read more at CBS News.
- On Monday, January 16, two gunmen killed six people in a home in Goshen, Calif., including a ten-month-old infant. The authorities suspect there was cartel involvement. Read more at the New York Times.
- The deadliest shooting was on Saturday, January 21, at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, Calif., a predominantly Asian-American community, where a gunman killed eleven people and wounded nine. The shooter was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Read more at the Los Angeles Times or the New York Times.
- On Monday, January 23, a farmworker shot seven people and injured one in Half Moon Bay, Calif. The shooting took place on two mushroom farms, allegedly after the shooter was told by his supervisor to pay $100 to repair a broken forklift. Read more at NPR.
- On the same night as the Half Moon Bay shooting, there was a shooting between several people in Oakland, Calif. One person was killed, and seven were injured. Read more at ABC News or the New York Times.
- Last Friday, Jan 27, a gunman killed one person and injured three others with a semi-automatic weapon in different shootings that the San Diego Police believe are connected. Two of the injured victims were 15-year-old boys. Read more at NBC or Times of San Diego.
- Last Saturday, Jan 28, three people were killed and four were wounded by gun violence in a short-term luxury rental in Beverly Crest, Calif. Read more at the New York Times or ABC News.
