Basketball Bounces Back
Every sports team wears an outfit on game days, but the boys basketball team dress to impress in a collared shirt and tie. Thier team spirit shows as they strut around the campus and when they dribble the ball on the courts.
Despite the loss of six seniors, the boys varsity basketball team is revamped and looks stronger than ever.
“We will play hard and be very competitive,” said Head Coach James reilly, who has been coaching the team for three years. “We will try to improve every day.”
So far, the season is off to a good start with a record of 5-3, as of December 10.
“We are now working harder than we have since I have been at the school,” senior Ben Kohl said. “We know what we can achieve, and we are doing everything in our power to see to it that we reach our goals.”
Unfortunately for the team, Ben injured himself during a game versus Del Mar. He has a severely sprained ankle with some ligament damage. He does not plan to take the season off, but he will not be able to play for three to four weeks.
“I expect all of the players to be prepared and to play well regardless of whether any one player is hurt,” Reilly said.
This year’s seniors have especially stepped up their game to fill the empty slots.
“The seniors this year are really becoming vocal leaders and are helping the team out a lot,” sophomore Sean Wells said.
The players have high hopes for the upcoming season, and according to Ben, the team could be even stronger than last year’s. The players’ goal is to “make their mark in CCS” and possible even win leagues. The toughest team for the school to beat will be Monta Vista, last year’s league champions.
In addition to losing six players, the team also lost its assistant coach, Dan Carter. JV head coach Bob McFarlane has been helping coach the team and made considerable contributions.
“We have great coaching this year,” sophomore Spencer Wells said. “Coach Reilly knows a lot about the game and gives us great advice about what we need to do. Also, Coach White and Coach McFarlane contribute a lot of key ideas that make us better as a team.”
According to Spencer, “everyone on the team has good relationships with the coaches.”
The coaches are also very appreciative of the players’ efforts and enjoy working with the athletes.
“The players are great kids,” Reilly said. “They make a lot of fun, and seeing them grow and mature as young men is very rewarding.”
The team has great chemistry on and off the court and really enjoys working with one another to improve.
“We have a good group of guys who all like to work hard, and we always have fun doing it,” Ben said.
