Los Altos High School students dive to the ground, chasing around nets, and trash talking each other, which could only mean that it’s the Associated Student Body (ASB)’s annual Spikeball tournament.
146 teams were registered in the event, which ran from Monday, September 16 to Thursday, September 19. Out of almost 300 participants, seniors Penn Kaplan and Cole Massey beat the odds to win the tournament for the second year in a row.
“I like the competitive energy when you compete against other people,” Cole said. “It gets your heart rate up.”
From accommodating more teams, to the addition of a staff team, this year’s Spikeball tournament saw new changes.
“It’s hard for tournaments like dodgeball, where you need five other friends,” ASB President senior Francis Ruan said. “Some people don’t have that, and that’s perfectly fine.”
ASB focused this year’s changes to increasing access. Changing from previous years, matches were played on the football field, making it easier for students to compete in and watch the tournament. ASB also coordinated with the cafeteria to provide lunch for all participants, which encouraged students to join without needing to stop for food. Spikeball also generally doesn’t involve large teams, allowing more students to participate.
The finals of the tournament took place at the end of the week on Thursday, September 19. After winning last year, Penn and Cole entered the competition with the goal of defending their title in mind, down to their team name being 2 Time.
“As the reigning champions, I think you go in with the expectation that you’re going to win,” Penn said.
For Francis, the tournament is not only a reflection of ASB’s work, but it is also a way for students to spend time together, cheer for friends, and enjoy a sport.
“Overall, it’s just a great experience for the ASB team to see,” Francis said. “It really does bring a smile on my face when I see people celebrate with their teammates and get excited.”
