Last Tuesday, September 10, the Los Altos varsity boys water polo team beat the Gunn High School Titans 15-11 at home in their first league game.
The Eagles entered the water strong, leading 4–2 in the first quarter. However, disputes with referees in the second quarter resulted in multiple Eagle ejections. Gunn was able to capitalize, tying the game 5–5 by halftime.
Senior Will O’Shaughnessy received three ejections and fouled out in the third quarter. However, the team was able to manage, and ended the quarter with a close 11–10 lead.
“All I could do at that point was to cheer for my team and hope they could come through with the win,” Will said. “We talked about shooting the ball more, and my teammates finally took this into account.”
The lead grew in the fourth, with Los Altos scoring four times, while the Titans only managed one. The victory was a strong opening, promising a successful season for the Eagles.
“Our offensive performance was a standout aspect of the game; we executed well, demonstrating strong teamwork and efficiency in capitalizing on opportunities,” Tasman said. “Our preparation has been thorough and focused, with the team dedicating substantial time to training and strengthening our defensive play.”
Tasman recognized junior Benji Barkovich for his impressive contribution, scoring five goals, ultimately giving the Eagles the momentum they needed to conclude the game.
“The team’s overall performance was great,” senior Zach Meyers said. “All teammates were effective with communication, ball control, and defense. Still, as we progress through league games and tournaments, we should work on incorporating different defensive plays as we protect the cage.”
This idea was echoed by Tasman, who wants to work more with the team to fine-tune their defensive strategies.
“There are specific areas that require adjustments to improve overall cohesion and positioning,” Tasman said. “Our goal is to peak at the right time, playing our best water polo when it matters most and competing at the highest level throughout the season.”
The Eagles will play their next game at home against the Fremont High School Firebirds today at 6 p.m.
