Pulitzer Prize winner and immigration advocate Jose Antonio Vargas spoke at the school yesterday, November 18.
Vargas is a Mountain View High School alum who revealed that he was an undocumented immigrant in a piece for the New York Times, and has since been campaigning for comprehensive immigration reform.
Vargas spoke to a sold out audience both about his views on immigration and about his personal journey as an undocumented immigrant. He also talked about the people who helped him after he discovered he was here illegally in high school. These individuals included his high school principal, superintendent and schools board members.
After his speech, he answered questions from the audience on a broad range of topics, both personal and political.
The MVLA Community Scholars, a group that helps provide mentoring and financial assistance to needy students, organized the event. Vargas was one of the first students to go through the program.
