Jose Antonio Vargas to speak in Eagle Theatre
On Sunday, November 18, former Mountain View High School student Jose Antonio Vargas will be speaking in the Eagle Theatre. Vargas is Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, co-founder of Define American and a TIME Cover Story author, in addition to being an undocumented immigrant and immigration activist.
The MVLA Community Scholars will be presenting his talk, “Not Legal. Not Leaving. How will the 2012 Election Affect Immigration?” The event is free and will take place from 2–3:30 p.m. The talk will be moderated by Dick Henning, the founder and host of the Celebrity Forum Speaker Series. First Quarter Ends
On Friday, October 12, the first quarter ended. Grades for teachers were due on Tuesday, October 16.
Although teachers are not able evaluate a quarter until they look at student achievement and attendance, according to Vice Principal Galen Rosenberg, this quarter was a smooth one.
“Constructions going along smoothly, in fact we’re a little ahead of schedule,” Mr. Rosenberg said. “[And] the recycling thing is all pretty much in place, which is progress.”
In addition, this quarter LAHS received a growth API of 889 which is a 16 point increase from last school year’s base API.
Pumpkin patch funds LAHS Athletic Boosters
The LAHS Athletic Boosters are hosting their annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser in the LAHS parking lot. The Pumpkin Patch is open from October 14 through October 31, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. Unlike previous years at LAHS, this year the Pumpkin Patch is located in the former preschool location at the back of the student parking lot.
The money raised is support school sports programs.
“We also use the money help with field improvements or anything else the school needs help funding,” Athletic Booster President Sherri Bakos said.
This year the Athletic Boosters are hoping to raise $10,000. The pumpkins vary in price from $1-15.
“We have all kinds, sizes, and shapes and you’ll be sure to find the ‘perfect’ pumpkin at The Patch,” Bakos said.
