On Tuesday, October 14, the varsity girls tennis team played the Homestead Mustangs and pulled off a 4-3 win.
“It felt really good because we lost to [Homestead] the first time we played them and this time we won by a lot, which means our team is improving,” junior Niki Mohajer said.
Los Altos’ wins came from junior Carina Burdick and freshman Nadia Ghaffari, the team’s singles one and two players. The other two wins came from the Eagles’ number one and two doubles teams: co-captain senior Madi Bourquin and freshman Aline Wu, and juniors Niki Mohajer and Katherine Yen, respectfully.
Madi and Aline split set, played into a third set and ultimately won 6-2, while Niki and Katherine won a closely contested 7-6 match, and another 6-0 match.
“I feel that our win today was very well deserved, since all of us worked very hard and fought for every point,” Aline said.
Today’s results mark a stride forward in performance for the doubles teams, as this is among their most successful showings this season.
Based on previous losses that players have attributed more to a lack of focus, rather than lack of skill, today’s victory is a positive sign that the team is pulling itself back into shape to prepare for future, bigger matches. Los Altos’ next game will be Tuesday, October 21, against Gunn, who Los Altos has already beaten this season.
