To say that the girls varsity tennis team’s match versus Los Gatos on Thursday, September 18, was close, would be an understatement.
After the Eagles’ singles 1, 2 and 3 players won their matches and all three doubles pairs lost their matches, it was all up to singles 4 player, co-captain senior Madi Bourquin, to bring the win home. With the team’s scores tied up at 3-3, Madi’s game would determine the outcome of the match.
In a show of athleticism and stamina, Madi won her match in the third set with a game score of 6-4, allowing the team to win 4-3 in match scores.
“I was really tired the first set, I had more energy the second and third sets,” Madi said.
While Madi and the team’s three other singles players dominated, Los Altos’ doubles team struggled comparatively. The reason the doubles have been struggling this season may be attributed to a lack of experience among the doubles pairs.
“All of our double players are new, the new players don’t know what to expect,” junior Nikki Mohajer said.
Even so, the new doubles players have been making improvements to their game, both in practice and during matches.
“The doubles are improving each week, it takes time to adjust to varsity, and they’ve been doing well at it so far,” co-captain senior Whitney Matthews said.
The team heads over to Cupertino to face Homestead on Tuesday, September 23.
