The Eagles capped off their last league game with a 52-33 rout of Santa Clara on Friday, February 21, on senior night to boot. The night started out with the team’s underclassmen performing in a flash mob to Kool & the Gang’s song “Celebration”—a tribute to honor the program’s seniors. Senior night would offer more to celebrate, however.
Los Altos got off to an early lead, but Santa Clara kept it close. Junior Rebecca Andrews hit a three-pointer late in the first to close out the quarter 13-9. The second quarter, however, would see the Eagles not only deliver a blistering 18-point performance but also limit the Bruins to a paltry two points. Sophomore Katie Munro opened up the quarter with a two-pointer, followed by sophomore Meg Enthoven going in for an offensive rebound, leaving Santa Clara trailing 9-17. The two would go on to score the second and third most points in the game for Los Altos, with Meg scoring 11 points and Katie putting eight in the net. Co-captain senior Kelly Hamamoto rounded off the Eagles’ dominating second quarter performance by draining the team’s second three-pointer of the game, bringing the game to halftime with a score of 31-11.
“We were focused right from the beginning and finished strong,” senior Tiffany Wu said. “We moved around more on offense, which created a lead and tired the defense out.”
The team’s seniors also contributed to the Eagles’ offense, with co-captain Senior Meghan McDermott leading the team with 15 points, nine rebounds and one steal and Kelly with seven points and assists and three rebounds and steals. Los Altos would go on to defeat the Bruins soundly, 52-33. The win closes out league-play of a record breaking season, one which saw the team win 14 consecutive games. The Eagles end league tied with Monta Vista for second place in the El Camino Division behind Saratoga (11-1) and with a 9-3 and an overall 17-6 record.
“It was really great to come in second,” Tiffany said. “We were close but we had a great run especially with the 14 win streak. I think the team just needs to continue hitting free throws, box out and keep doing what we’ve been doing.”
Los Altos now heads into DII CCS playoffs (after receiving a first round bye), with its first game against either Leland or Willow Glen High School at home on Thursday, February 27, at 7 p.m.
