Yesterday, March 29, the boy’s volleyball team defeated Eastside Prep in a thrilling five set match. Senior Spencer Simonides led the way for the Eagles, carrying them to the team’s fourth win in league this season.
With senior Ian McColl sitting out the game, the Eagles were missing size at the net, but Spencer came up big when it mattered most for the Eagles, blocking a powerful shot by Eastside Prep early in the fifth set that helped motivate the team to victory.
“That block energized us to go out and win,” senior Paul Bergevin said.
After winning the first and third sets, the Eagles dropped the fourth set decisively. The team was reeling and the momentum clearly shifted to favor Eastside Prep, which made Spencer’s emphatic block that much more significant.
The match was grueling, lasting almost two and a half hours, but showed a lot about the character of this upstart team. In their first season competing as a varsity sport at the school, the boy’s volleyball team proved that they are not just going to roll over and blame their inexperience. This win cemented this team’s status as a contender in league. With a record of 4 wins and 2 losses, the Eagles are optimistic they can continue to improve and challenge the best teams in their league.
