The chants of “goodbye Mountain View” echoed in the Los Altos High School gym yesterday, January 22, as the boys basketball team crushed their rival in a dominant 53-38 win. Led by leading scorer senior Steven Garverick and senior captain Joey Malgesini, the Eagles came back from a deficit in the first quarter to put away the Spartans in convincing fashion.
Strong support from the Los Altos High community, spurred on by Blue Crew enthusiasm, set the tone for the game and that energy translated into the team’s performance. The full court press generated numerous turnovers, and second half zone defense held Mountain View to just 5 points in the third quarter. Though they trailed 10-11 after one period of play, the Eagles went into half up a point after a buzzer beater by junior Daniel Rosenbaum, and continued to lead the rest of the game.
“We came out a little bit flat,” Joey said. “Once all that subsided and we focused on what we do, we were able to defend much better and that really ignited our offense. We started to get much better looks, work the ball around more and play more like a determined team.”
A Mountain View timeout with 2:48 left in the third couldn’t stop the Los Altos run – they were up by 12 at the time – and Los Altos cruised from then on out.
The Eagles are 4-0 in league and their next game is tomorrow, January 24 against Homestead.
